What happens?
This is what will happen. You will enter a building and immediately see a line of people. Most will have a head shot photo with all the particulars in hand. Many will also have 5 or so Zed cards which have several different poses. Trust me they will ask for a B&W head-shot as a minimum. Eventually a complete portfolio and resume will be required. You will hear things like head-shot, composite, zed or comp cards during this experience. Having professional photography here really is a must. You want to put your best foot forward. This is a highly competitive market and normally you only get one shot.
What are they?
What’s the difference between a head-shot and a zed or composite?
A head-shot is typically either an 8×10 or 8½ x 11 photography, usually in black & white, with the actors or model’s name printed on the top or bottom, agent or agency’s name if represented and particulars printed on the back. These are what we call “throw a ways”. You will go through a lot of these. It is a high quality 2-sided print on 60lb stock. B&W glossy photographs printed in quality photo grade stock are also good to have if you are successful and get a call back. Those are significantly more expensive, whereas a printed 2-sided head-shot on the lesser stock would be more cost effective. (See Sample)

A comp (composite) or a zed card can be an 8½ x 11 or (most commonly) 5½ x 8½, and can be either Black & White or color photography. The most popular layout is a head-shot on the front and 3 or 4 images on the back (assortment of poses, outfits, styles, etc.) (See Sample)
